Chiropractic Care for a Healthier, More Comfortable Pregnancy

pregnant coupleEvery day at inBalance Chiropractic and Wellness, we are honored to help patients across the spectrum get out of pain and back to their activities of daily living and the things they love in life. One such patient is a young 30-something-year-old mom who recently started experiencing mid and low back pain. As a result, she had trouble sleeping and could not do activities around the house, such as vacuuming.

Given that the mom was 32 weeks pregnant when she first came in for care, it’s understandable that the maneuvering required to vacuum was challenging. However, when she came in recently for an appointment, she reported feeling better and was able to vacuum!

Small Wins Are a Big Deal

Dr. Ryan thought about what she said and told her, “Even a small win can feel like a big victory.” He added that although the patient was feeling better, she still experiences some aches as her body is undergoing many changes.

“Part of my education to her was this: we know that the body is going through these changes, and the fact that you’re under care and now can do things around your house helps to take a little bit of burden off of you,” he added. Dr. Ryan finds it rewarding to help pregnant moms like this mother have a better ability to do activities of daily living. “The patient can also sleep better and lie on her side and back without much trouble,” he said.

According to Dr. Ryan, all that eventually will lead to a much healthier birth, fewer complications, shorter labor times, and fewer labor pains. “Of course, the biggest joy of all is having a healthy baby at the end,” he said.

The Importance of Early and Regular Care

Dr. Ryan emphasizes the value of starting chiropractic care early in pregnancy, or even before conception, for optimal benefits. As pregnancy progresses, the body releases the hormone relaxin, which loosens ligaments and can lead to joint instability. Regular chiropractic adjustments, tailored to the needs of pregnant women, help manage these changes, improving comfort and potentially reducing labor complications.

Training and Expertise in Prenatal Chiropractic Care

It’s also crucial to choose a chiropractor who is certified in pregnancy care and has undergone additional training, such as the Webster Technique. Dr. Ryan highlights the role of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) in providing specialized training for chiropractors. This expertise ensures that moms-to-be receive safe, effective, personalized care throughout their pregnancy.
